The achievement of a nuclear-weapons-free world has been compared to the task of scaling an incredibly high and treacherous mountain. The climb up is hampered by continuing regional conflicts, reluctance of the nuclear-weapon States and their allies to abandon nuclear deterrence, lack of confidence in disarmament agreements, power and privilege arising from nuclear weapons possession, vested interest of nuclear weapons corporations, and more. Inspired by the success of New Zealander Edmund Hillary to surprise the doubters and reach the peak of Mt Everest despite extremely difficult conditions over 50 years ago, fellow New Zealander Alyn Ware shows how the peak of nuclear abolition can also be reached well within our lifetime – and with plenty of mountain singing along the way.
